"Whether it's self-indulgence or self-discipline, whatever I reinforce will
grow stronger than me."
J. M. Lockwood
Emotions are like muscles. The ones we exercise most will grow the most; thus we can build
up the strength of our emotional will-muscle by exercising it more. The more that we
reinforce our will-muscle, the less we'll be pushed around by insecure or overgrown parts.
It is similar to running against a very strong headwind: By pushing through resistance, we
stretch our muscles and find that we make even greater strides after the headwinds
diminish because of our greater strength.
A wave of self-reinforcing momentum builds up in each life as a cumulative result of all
the choices we make. If we're self-indulgent, the wave presses down on us as we get weaker
and its cumulative weight increases. The weaker we grow, the more things that can control
us. If we build self-discipline to get up on top of that wave, its momentum helps us and
life gets easier and easier.
