Use Role Reversal to Get on the Same Side

"Whenever anyone's always right, there must be something wrong."

We can disagree and both be right. It depends on what we value. Just because one person's right doesn't mean the other ‘s wrong. It helps to realize that we may just be valuing different things or focusing on different aspects but that we share similar values on our deepest levels. That's why it helps to Reverse Roles and to imagine how you'd see things if you were the other person.

If we accept that both views have validity, and from the angle they're looking at each is right, we find levels of shared values and mutual respect for tackling the areas of difference.

Conflicts develop when we think that only our view is valid. We often forget that "the truth" doesn't mean "THE TRUTH" - it is just the point at which our curiosity rests, where we say to ourselves, "Yeah, that makes sense. I can believe that." It helps us to remember it's just "the-truth-as-we-see-it."

Role Reversal can be helpful in overcoming most conflicts. Used as a tool, it urges us to ask, "What is going on here on all the different levels and which areas do we agree on, which ones should be given greatest weight in this instance, and what can I do to help the other person's levels while still pursuing the ones I think are the most important?"
